#MAJLIS is envisioned as more than just an architectural piece; it is a space for storytelling and dialogue.
This project is a collaborative effort with Maryam El Homaid & Spectra Arts, celebrating shared knowledge, storytelling, and community. It demonstrates how reverence for tradition can be seamlessly integrated with contemporary design to create environments that are meaningful on emotional, cultural, and social levels.
Ultimately, #MAJLIS is a space for connection in the modern age where tradition meets innovation, words become architecture, and storytelling bridges past and present.
The structure is designed in the shape of a hashtag (#) in plan a symbol of modern communication that embodies the digital age’s connectivity. This choice highlights how communication has evolved from spoken words within physical spaces to instant, global exchanges across platforms. Constructed from glass and metal, the installation features intricate etching of Arabic script, inspired by the phrase “Asfarat wa Anwarat” a warm greeting meaning "arrived with radiance and light."
As sunlight or artificial illumination interacts with the etched surfaces, shadows animate the calligraphy, creating an atmosphere of warmth, illumination, and engagement. The open corners and central passage foster accessibility and encourage flow, making it a dynamic space for interaction.
